Fonte Martino is officially ours! The previous owners have vacated and it is now 100% ours – WHAT HAVE WE DONE??? Just kidding…although to be totally honest, we think everyone goes through a bit of buyer’s remorse and we would not be totally truthful if we didn’t admit to having a brief moment of panic, but a glass of local Vino Nobile and a good night’s sleep seems to always calm the nerves.
Ok, back to the story. We woke up early Saturday morning (February 18th) in the apartment we rented. We got ready and walked through the cobblestone streets of Montepulciano, the air was cool and the town was just beginning to come to life. We were heading to one of our favorite cafes, Café Poliziano, to have a cappuccino and cornetto – an Italian pastry similar to a croissant. The anticipation of driving to our new home and being there alone for the first time was building.
With breakfast finished, we walked to our car and began the short 5-minute drive from Montepulciano to Fonte Martino. Excitement and anticipation to introduce ourselves to our new home was overwhelming. We passed through olive groves, vineyards, and the truffle reserve to arrive at the front gate. Fumbling nervously with the massive number of keys, we unlocked and swung open our gate.
We traveled up the driveway and as we got closer and closer our excitement was growing. We arrived at our new home. We parked the car, stepped out, and instantly felt overwhelming peace. We took in the beauty of Montepulciano on the hilltop and the mountains in the distance. Through the peaceful silence, we could hear the sounds of the wind and church bells. We marveled in the beauty and our accomplishment. This was a very proud and surreal moment for us. Our eight-year dream finally came true…
Shuffling through the keys, we found the correct one to unlock the external shutter securing the door, then unlocked the door itself, and stepped into our house for the first time completely alone. Hello house. Soon you will be our home.
We continued through the house opening all the shutters, doors, and windows to let in the warm Tuscan sun, which illuminated the cotto floors and wood ceiling beams. There is just something so special about sunlight filling a home that makes it come to life.
This is truly one of the most magical moments of our lives. We are profoundly grateful for the help and encouragement we have received from our family and friends. We don’t know how we can ever say thank you for being part of our special journey…
