Carnival in Montepulciano 2023

Piazza Grande e la Rocca di Montepulciano
Each year, Carnival is celebrated in Montepulciano on the Sunday before Mardi Gras. The festivities begin with a parade through the streets of Montepulciano. Participants are dressed in elaborate costumes and beautiful masks and afterwards, there is a wonderful Carnival party in Piazza Grande with shows for children.

Every May 1st, Montepulciano celebrates Labor Day with a festival in honor of Sant’Agnese. It starts with a historic procession through the ancient streets of Montepulciano celebrating the Saint. The Bravio delle Botti is an annual wine barrel race held in Montepulciano since 1974. The 8 Contrada (neighborhoods) of Montepulciano compete by rolling 176 pound (80 kg) wine barrels up the steeply inclined streets for over 1km in the historic center.
